Halloween In New York

As it’s Thanksgiving in America I thought it was the perfect time to share some pictures from the last holiday-I-don’t-quite-understand; Halloween. Sometimes I feel so loyal to Christmas that I forget to love any other holiday. But the New York Halloween Parade on 6th Avenue was one of my favourite thing I’ve seen here so far. Something about hundreds and hundreds of people all gathered in the same place to do something solely founded in joy and excitement and celebration of life and death and madness made me so happy. I loved just being there alone, standing in the crowd and watching the costumes and the floats and drunk, slightly creepy wizards walk by.

Anyway I hope you enjoy the pictures and that you’re having a good Thanksgiving wherever you are and whether or not you understand what it’s actually all about. My favourite thing in the parade was the float with Maya Angelou’s face on it but you can barely see it in the photo. I also liked the women dressed in white who were pouring glitter on everyone in the crowd. I think once I leave college this might be my future career…

  1. I cannot make myself think of Halloween as a holiday. A party occasion and huge money machine, apparently, but not an actual reason to celebrate anything – which would be Reformation Day or All Saints’ Day.
I hope you have a lovely first Thanksgiving in the US, and that you won’t have to spend it alone. Digital hugs!

  2. i’m glad you enjoyed your first halloween parade in nyc, years ago i took a friend from england and she was quite overwhelmed but in a good way. thanks for posting all your great pics, it’s been many years since i was able to attend but i always love the spectacle.
i hope you’re settling in a bit more, i think it was incredibly brave for you to leave england for our strange distant shores – kind of like the pilgrims 🙂 hopefully you’ll have a nice first thanksgiving.
(ps your posts are inspiring & as someone who has suffered with anxiety for a long time, i can relate to a lot of what you say. you are a wonderful writer – funny, touching, and eloquent.)

  3. So glad you went the Halloween parade in the Village. It’s always an amazing event. The Christmas tree gets lit in Rockefeller next week, don’t miss seeing that and all the Christmas windows in the stores on Fifth Avenue. Definitely go see them !!!

  4. Great pix, Scarlett – and really glad you are delving deeply into the whole massive, many-faceted entity that is NYC. I lived there with an American boyfriend for 3 months – changed my life – and only in a GOOD way.

  5. Happy Thanksgiving Scarlett!! Halloween is probably the most “unusual” holiday we celebrate (in the US anyway) – I always manage some way of havin’ fun.

    Loved the pix!!!
